To renovate the Odisee campus building in Aalst, Belgium, once a bank, an innovative approach was necessary to address both aesthetic and technical challenges. Bruno Dekoning, architect from Bureau ADAM, was closely involved in the project and discusses the façade renovation process as well as the decision to use Rockpanel cladding.
Previously known BBL Bank, and later Fortis bank, the building was eventually converted into an educational institution, although it was not originally designed for this purpose. ‘It was a striking building with hanging terraces and a horizontal building,’ says Dekoning. ‘The facade was originally clad with steel sheets but lacked some insulation. Over time, these sheets began to detach, leading to both aesthetic and safety concerns. Subsequently, the terraces were temporarily clad with artwork consisting of cloths, but these materials were not fireproof.’
