New nursery for the ‘Gipfelstürmer’ at Kreideberg in Lüneburg

At the ‘Gipfelstürmer’ sports nursery, located within the Kreideberg Sports Park in Lüneburg, children are encouraged to play, learn and explore a variety of sports. In 2021, three architectural firms submitted designs for the planned new building.

The contract was awarded to JUP Architekten from Winsen, who developed a design that offers strong identification potential for children, parents and educators alike. Rockpanel Colours adds vibrant tones to the façade of the circular building as well as to the walls of the surrounding pergola.

The circle served as the key inspiration for the design: the semi-circular layout of the ‘Gipfelstürmer’ daycare centre echoes the classic form of an archetypal sports arena, both inside and out. ‘We didn't want standard architecture. This wish has been fully fulfilled,’ concludes daycare centre manager Mareike Müller.

However, the new building, with a diameter of almost 40 metres, is not only impressive because of its shape. Bright, open rooms throughout encourage movement across every room and both floors. At the heart of the building, the corridor areas flow into a two-storey, multifunctional hall of almost 120m ² complete with a slide from which most of the rooms can be reached. Thanks to the radial layout, group rooms with large facades open up to the outdoor area, offering space for children to enjoy a life of sport, play and exercise.

The compact design also ensures efficient use of the 2,000 m² site of the ‘Gipfelstürmer’ daycare centre. Constructed as a hybrid structure, the building features a solid ground floor with an upper floor built using timber-frame construction. The new building is energy self-sufficient, equipped with a modern geothermal heat pump, which, together with a photovoltaic system on the roof, provides environmentally friendly heating.

When selecting the products, care was taken to prioritise natural and sustainable building materials. For example, Rockpanel was used to clad the upper floor facades and the undersides of the roof and ceilings, are made of recyclable rock wool. If the building is ever demolished, the Rockpanel panels can be fully recycled and processed into new rock wool products. Their low-maintenance, durable and long-lasting qualities enable local authorities to construct buildings that are both economical and sustainable.

JUP Architects opted for 9 mm thick panels from Rockpanel's Colours series, which are classified as A2 non-combustible. ‘On the one hand, these improve preventive fire protection. On the other hand, the wide range of colours available made it very easy to achieve the desired rainbow effect in a sustainable manner. In addition, the panels can be bent and adapted to the shape of the building,’ says Project Manager and Architect Maike Jegenhorst from JUP.

A total of around 600 m² of Rockpanel in quartz grey, red, orange, yellow, blue, purple and green were installed, and fastened with screws to a wooden substructure. They were cut to size and screwed in place on site by Gottschalk Holzbau GmbH from Rosengarten-Nenndorf in accordance with Rockpanel's installation plan.

Rockpanel façade panels can be bent without pre-treatment, allowing them to adapt flexibly to the design requirements of a building.

Vertical slats made of powder-coated metal with a 3D look were installed in front of the surrounding railing of the pergola, painted in the same RAL colours as the Colours façade panels. This means that the colours of the rainbow are clearly visible even from a distance.

Rockpanel Colours façade panels are available in 144 standard, RAL and NCS colours. This alone offers an extraordinary range of design possibilities, further enhanced by the choice of panel cut and installation direction. Thanks to their high-quality multi-layer coating, Rockpanel exhibit excellent colour and UV resistance. No special treatment of saw or panel edges is required after cutting to protect against moisture. On request, Colours panels can be factory-coated with a ProtectPlus anti-graffiti coating.
