The Auweghem residential project in Mechelen represents a new approach to facade finishing. David Driesen, Manager of dmvA Architects, and Luc Boven Project Manager at Hooyberghs, discuss the challenges and choices involved in bringing this distinctive project to life, with particular emphasis on the application of Rockpanel cladding with a wood look finish on the characteristic sloping surfaces of the corner building.

According to David Driesen, Auweghem symbolises the transformation of the urban fringe around the ramparts of Mechelen. ‘The Battelsesteenweg, once an industrial thoroughfare, is now been given a new dynamic with this project. Where a windmill once defined the landscape, a residential environment is now being developed to address the growing demand of housing in Mechelen. By increasing the area’s density and introducing an open, green living space, the area is becoming liveable again,’ explains Driesen.
